Hurray! We made it to Trail Crest, 5,325' above Whitney Portal, only 855' to Mt Whitney summit. But we needed a rest and consider the weather.

The view west of Whitney opens up. Below are the Hitchcock Lakes and Guitar Lake on the right.
Mt Hitchcock's jagged east face has still snow, and in the left distance are the Kaweahs and to the right the Great Western Divide.

Looking at the clouds we did some soul searching. Billowing clouds are likely to form thunderstorms.
People returning from the the summit experienced electric charges which raised their hair.
We concluded that safety is more important than climbing another 6% higher. We descended in rain, occasional hail, some thunder, confirming that we made the right decision.
